What Makes NYC Is My Backyard different from the other programs out there?
There are three things that really set our program apart: group size, passionate teaching and our professional pedigrees.
There are many things that children need in order to succeed, chief among them, individualized attention. No matter how talented and dedicated a teacher, she cannot support or challenge each of her students the way she might want to, when instructing a class of 20. Or even 10. We keep our groups limited to five children per teacher. By doing this, we are able to help children learn in much the same way a tutor does; we can see what each child is doing and support and challenge him accordingly.
All teachers are college graduates who either have or are in the process of getting Master’s degrees. All teachers have experience working in group settings and one on one with students.
Passion for Teaching
Another thing that sets us apart is our passion for teaching and our understanding of best practices. As educators, we know that everyone does her best writing when she is truly invested in her topic. For children, there is no topic more compelling than their own exploration. We help students develop important skills while having a blast! It’s a little something we call “edutainment” and at NYC Is My Backyard, it is what we do best.
What is the teacher/student ratio?
At NYC Is My Backyard we know that when it comes to class size, bigger is not better. Therefore, we never have more than five students per teacher. (See FAQ “What Makes NYC Is My Backyard different from the other programs out there?”)
What is the age range of your clients?
Our adventures are designed for students in grades K-8.
How do you ensure that my 8th grader is engaged and learning while you are working with a Kindergartener?
As teachers who have taught children as young as four and as old as twenty-four, we are accustomed to developing and modifying curriculum for students of all ages and with a wide range of abilities. When you sign your child up for an adventure, you fill out a questionnaire giving us vital information about your child as a reader and a writer. This allows us to create writing templates that offer just the right amount of support and challenge for every learner.
Where in New York City do you go?
We currently offer explorations of Central Park, the West Village and Chelsea, Greenwich Village, The American Museum of Natural History and the Children’s Museum of the Arts. We are constantly developing new trips so stay tuned!
What do you do for birthday parties?
Our party format follows that of our trips; we guide children in an exploration of a city site and then facilitate the creation of either individualized books or a group book dedicated to the birthday boy or girl…it’s the parent’s choice!
What happens if only one or two children register for a particular class?
NYC Is My Backyard reserves the right to cancel any class due to low enrollment. If a class has only 3 students or under enrolled, you will be notified of the cancellation at least one week prior to the start date. If NYCIMBy cancels a class that your child is enrolled in, you will have the option to switch classes within the program or receive a full refund. Please sign up early to ensure classes proceed as scheduled..
What do you do if it rains?
In the event of inclement weather we take our adventures inside. While our summer trips are primarily outdoor adventures, our itinerary includes multiple spots such as museums, indoor markets, galleries and libraries where we can spend our days having fun and writing while staying dry!
